How to Get Rid of Fleas on Cats

The first thing you should do is inspect your cat’s fur with a fine-toothed comb. Run the comb through your cat’s fur at least 10-15 times. Then, pull the fleas from the fur onto a white piece of paper towel or surface. Repeat the process for all cats in the household.

Another effective way to kill fleas is by using spot-on flea treatments. These are usually applied on the back of the neck of your cat, and your cat can’t lick or scratch it off. However, not all spot-on treatments are effective, so be sure to check with your vet for the best one for your pet. Alternatively, you can give your cat a tablet that contains Benadryl. The tablet is generally administered at a dosage of 1 mg per pound of body weight and can be given up to three times a day.

It is important to treat your cat’s fleas as soon as you discover them. Keep in mind that different flea products are not effective for all stages of the life cycle, and so you may need to use several different treatments to kill all the fleas.

If your cat spends a lot of time outdoors, the chances of fleas acquiring it are higher. Fleas can even accidentally come into contact with your indoor cats. Luckily, topical flea and tick medications are safer for indoor cats than the ones that are recommended for dogs. These medications are based on pyrethroids and are not poisonous to cats, so your cat will be less susceptible to getting fleas.
