When the conditions are right, flea eggs will hatch in just a few days. Dog lice, on the other hand, stay attached to a family pet for their entire life cycle. These lice are difficult to detect by eye, and can look like dead skin or dandruff. To identify them, you need a flea comb. The flakes will fall onto the counter and stick to the hair.
Fleas are attracted to animal fur and feathers. When a bird has long, amble feathers, it is the perfect place for fleas to lay their eggs. Once inside the feathers, fleas will feed on dead skin and dander. Unlike other parasites, they do not have jaws.
To get rid of fleas, wash the bedding and areas where the pet typically sits or rests. You can also apply over-the-counter cortisone cream or calamine lotion. Depending on the severity of the infestation, you may need to use antihistamine medication. Avoid scratching the affected areas, as this can cause skin infections. Fortunately, fleabites and head lice are not contagious, and treatment will reduce the number of lice.
