How Large Can Fleas Get?
Fleas are small insects that feed on the blood of their host. They also use the host’s body as a breeding ground. A female flea can live up to 100 days without eating, and she can eat up to 15 times her body weight in blood every day. Fleas can also grow up to 50 times their body size when feeding on a single host.
Adult fleas are usually around 12 to 18 months in length, but can live longer if they have the perfect environment and a good source of blood. Once they lose their host, they will die. Fleas reproduce by laying eggs. The eggs are semi-transparent and shiny, resembling grains of salt. They are 0.3mm in diameter and about 0.5mm long.
Fleas do not have wings, but they can jump. Adult fleas can jump up to 30 centimeters horizontally and 18 centimeters vertically. Adult fleas are visible to the naked eye, but they are often difficult to spot when they hide in the fur of a host.
Fleas feed on dog and cat blood, but they can also feed on humans. They can infest a house within minutes and lay as many as fifty eggs a day.
