How Can Fleas Be Seen?
It is important to know how to identify fleas before they cause any damage to your home. Fleas are tiny, reddish-brown insects that jump from one place to another. They are not harmful to humans, but their bites can be very itchy and unpleasant. They do not fly or have a strong odor, but they are small enough to be seen with the human eye.
Fleas are easy to recognize. They have flat bodies with wingless, long legs. Their large back legs allow them to jump as much as 30 cm. They are usually between 1.5 and 4 millimeters long, with the male flea being a little smaller than the female. Fleas are also flat and narrow, which helps them maneuver through the thick hair on a pet.
Fleas are most active during warmer months, and they feed on warm-blooded animals. They can attach themselves to clothes and other materials around the home, and most often, they are found in sleeping areas. During peak flea season, fleas will live for three weeks.
In a home with many pets, cats are especially susceptible to flea infestations. If your pets often go outside, you may want to regularly check them to prevent the infestation from spreading. You might notice excessive scratching, or a sudden change in demeanor.
