Do Fleas Have to Bite For Capstar to Work?
To make your pet flea-free, you must treat them with a product like Capstar. This oral flea medication does not kill larvae and eggs, but it provides instant relief for adult flea infestations. It can be administered daily, weekly, monthly, or even just once a week depending on the frequency of flea infestations.
Capstar kills fleas by disrupting their life cycle by blocking their ability to reproduce. The product contains a neonicotinoid called nitrate, which acts on the flea’s nervous system by fastening itself to its acetylcholine receptors. This disrupts the transmission of nerve signals and destroys the flea’s central nervous system.
Capstar kills adult fleas within 30 minutes of administration and continues to work for up to 48 hours. This treatment is safe for dogs and cats, even young puppies. It also works on fly larvae and ticks, but it doesn’t kill their eggs.
Adult fleas can lay their eggs five to twenty days after they bite an animal. These eggs are known as their “blood meal.” The eggs can take up to two days to hatch, so it is important to treat them as quickly as possible to minimize their life cycle.
