Can You Have Fleas in Your Home Without Pets?
It’s important to clear your home of fleas, even if you don’t have pets. These parasites can survive months without detecting a host, making you a prime target for the pests. Additionally, if you haven’t kept any pets, your home may be home to other pests, such as mice or rodents.
Fleas can enter a home through a number of different methods, including a guest from another home with fleas, or a pet owner who has an infestation. They may also be introduced into a home by wild animals. These animals may have taken up residence on your property without your knowledge, or have left their nests in the attic, on your patio, or in trees near your home.
Fleas prefer the blood of dogs and cats, but will also feed on humans. Fleas can breed within 24 hours and lay up to 50 eggs in one day. Infestation of a home can lead to serious health problems for your pets. Some pets can experience an allergic reaction or anemia from the flea bites.
Once a flea eggs have been laid, the larvae will hatch within a few days to two weeks. The larvae live in dark, moist environments and feed off the feces of other adult fleas. The waste products of flea larvae are small reddish dirt specks and can be the first sign of an infestation.
