Can Fleas on Cats Cause Weight Loss?
Cats may have weight loss due to tapeworm infection, especially if they have fleas on their coats. Tapeworms are round, flattened creatures with a single, tiny head, and a series of segments, which contain eggs. When they are mature, tapeworms live in the cat’s small intestine. The head is embedded in the mucous lining of the small intestine. The mature segments break off and pass in the feces. The segments may be several inches long.
To find fleas, check your cat’s fur for tiny black specks and clumps. Fleas often live in soft furnishings and carpeting. Vacuuming and washing cat bedding regularly will keep your pet flea-free. In addition, you should check your cat’s skin periodically for fleas. Fleas are small, flat insects, and they love to live in warm, protected areas.
Oatmeal can help relieve itching from flea bites. Ground oatmeal can be mixed with warm water and applied to the affected area. You should let the paste stay on for at least 10 minutes, then remove it with a clean towel. Another way to remove fleas is to use a flea comb. A flea comb is designed with close tines that catch fleas. If you find any, you should rinse the comb in warm water to kill any fleas.
If you notice your cat losing weight, fleas could be causing it. These insects feed on the red blood cells, causing anemia and lethargy. They can also cause your cat to develop an enlarged spleen and lymph nodes.
