Your cat’s behavior can change when fleas invade. It may begin to scratch constantly, shake its head, and frantically scurry from room to room. It may even develop bald patches. If you notice any of these changes, you should visit your veterinarian immediately.

Your cat’s behavior may also be affected by other problems. The constant bites and scratching can cause it to become hyper and uncomfortable. Some cats can develop a condition called hyperthyroidism. This condition affects senior cats and causes them to act hyperactively. They are usually very active and don’t sleep much.

Adult fleas are brownish insects that range in size from a pinhead to one eighth of an inch. They have a flattened body with short antennae and a strong saw-toothed jaw. Their slender sucking snout is also long enough to reach seven feet. Fleas can jump up to seven feet! The mouth of the cat flea is made of three parts, two petal-shaped, and one to pierce the cat’s blood vessel.

Flea bites may cause itching and irritation. In some cats, flea bites may even result in an allergic reaction. The skin may become red or swollen. It may also develop scab-like bumps. These skin conditions are usually treatable with veterinary intervention to prevent the inflammation and infection.
