Can Fleas Infest Humans?
Fleas are attracted to warm environments, like your home, and they thrive in areas that are not too cold. A flea infestation can make your pet nervous and irritable, and it can also spread various diseases. This is why it is important to treat flea infestations right away.
There are over two thousand different species of fleas in the world, but they cannot live on humans. Humans do not have the hair or feathers needed by fleas to reproduce. They need to feed on the hair or fur of another animal for at least 12 hours before they can lay their eggs. Fleas do not live on humans for very long, and they are more likely to bite your pet than bite you.
Adult fleas are about 1/12 to one eighth of an inch long, with a flat, dark brown body. They are wingless and have modified hind legs that allow them to jump up to eight inches vertically or sixteen inches horizontally. Flea bites cause itching and raised skin. In severe cases, the bites can result in infections and injuries.
Fleas usually bite people two or three times before they realize they are not their preferred meal. If you have a pet with fleas, you can use homemade flea spray to kill them. You can also apply flea-killing sprays to your chicken coop to suffocate the fleas and prevent them from re-infesting.
