Can Fleas Be Transferred by Humans?
Fleas are small wingless insects that spend most of their lives on cats and dogs. They reproduce quickly and lay eggs on host animals. Their bodies are thin and laterally compressed with spines that help them maneuver through the hair of their hosts. Unlike the eggs of many other pests, the eggs of fleas cannot be transferred to humans.
Flea bites can be very itchy and appear as red specks. These spots, which can swell, are typically on the lower body. They are often mistaken for other types of insect bites. If you sleep with your pet, you may also develop these irritated areas. Moreover, fleas are known to carry parasites that can cause various diseases.
While it is best to avoid visiting flea-infested homes, you can still be at risk for bringing home fleas. While they cannot live on clothes, you can catch them on your skin or your clothing. Fleas can also attach to your shoes, clothing, and luggage.
You should consult a healthcare provider if you suspect that you or a family member may be infected with fleas. The doctor will be able to prescribe antihistamines, antibacterial creams, and other treatments.
