Can Cat Fleas Eat Dogs?
Fleas are a nuisance, especially for dogs. They feed on the blood of your pet and then lay their eggs. The eggs hatch after one to twelve days, depending on the temperature. Warmer temperatures accelerate the hatching process. The eggs hatch into white worm-like larvae. The larvae spin a cocoon and pupate in seven to 14 days. The adult fleas then emerge, and the cycle begins again.
Adult fleas can consume up to 15 times their own weight. While adults are omnivorous, they are selective in their host. The domestic cat flea is the most common type of flea in North America, scientific name Ctenocephalides felis. This species prefers dogs, cats and humans as their hosts.
There are many different flea control products available for dogs and cats. Some contain a combination of different ingredients. Some are more effective than others. Some are applied as drops to the back of the neck. However, it is important to note that spot-ons are never recommended for cats. Always consult with your vet to find out which product is best suited for your pet.
Fleas can be hard to spot, but there are several signs to look for. Physical signs include redness, spots, and thickened skin around the ears. Occasionally, you can also see behaviour changes in your pet. Sometimes, pets will scratch themselves but will only do so when they are not being observed.
