Why Does a Cockroach Die When Put in Water?
A cockroach cannot survive in water unless it is provided with oxygen. While some insects can survive for hours in water, cockroaches are not good swimmers and can only survive a few minutes under water. They can hold their breath for about thirty minutes and then bob up to the surface to breathe.
Because cockroaches have a flat back and six legs, they are very bulky. This helps them fit into cracks and crevices. This flat body and high center of gravity also helps cockroaches carry their weight in their abdomens. This makes it difficult for a dying cockroach to bob up and down without support.
In addition to water, roaches need food and dark, moist environments. They leave behind pheromone trails that attract other roaches. They also contaminate food with bacteria. They also leave excrement around your kitchen and may even eat old documents or family photos. Then they lay their eggs in wall voids and behind cabinets.
In addition to these reasons, cockroaches are incredibly resilient. Even when drowned, they may survive for up to 30 minutes. If you have a cockroach infestation, contact a pest control service. Terminix offers free pest estimates.
