When Do Cockroaches Fly?
WouterCockroaches can’t fly, but that doesn’t mean they can’t move. Their wings can be used for balance and jumping, but they won’t have much control over their landing. One of the most common household species is the American cockroach, which can grow up to two inches long. Its wings are reddish black and cover most of its back. The size of its overall body depends on its sex.
In fact, cockroaches are not afraid of humans and only fly when it is necessary. They don’t fly to launch attacks or socialize. If they do fly into your home, it’s almost always an accident. They’re not strong flyers and their aim isn’t much better than anyone else’s.
The American cockroach uses its wings to glide from higher surfaces to lower ones in search of moisture and cooler temperatures. Its ideal temperature is around 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and it uses its wings to glide from higher elevations to lower ones. Cockroaches have a range of temperatures, but they prefer temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Only a few species of cockroaches fly. The ability to fly depends on their life stage and sometimes on the cockroach’s gender. Cockroaches that are immature are not able to fly, and females are incapable of flying because of their highly effective legs. Even if they can fly, flying cockroaches are rare and confined to cities, where summer is warmer and damper.
