What Can You Use to Deter Roaches?
To get rid of cockroaches, make sure your living space is clean and free from clutter. Roaches are attracted to food and clutter. A stocked pantry with spilled food and trash cans will invite them into your home. You can also try sealing these areas with glue strips. Also, make sure to clean gutters and leave a vegetation-free zone around your home. Avoid adding mulch and other toxins around your home, as these could attract roaches to your house.
Gel-type baits can be used for this purpose. They can be used in conjunction with products that kill adult roaches. They are not effective on fully grown roaches, and it may take several months before they show any effect. When using gel baits, make sure to place a small dot on each area where cockroaches are likely to congregate. If you have a large infestation, you may have to apply more baits to the area.
Essential oils are also an effective deterrent. Citrus essential oils like lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit contain limonene, which repels roaches. Some citrus oils are even beneficial in deterring roaches, such as peppermint. These scents can be mixed with water and applied to the affected area.
Another effective deterrent is diatomaceous earth. This powder is safe for humans, but is toxic to cockroaches and ants. It works by killing roaches at the point of contact and prevents them from returning. Diatomaceous earth is a natural repellent made from fossilized algae that dehydrates roach exoskeletons. It can be applied to walls or to other areas of the home.
