Is Cockroach Milk Real?
Cockroach milk is a nutrient-rich liquid produced by a female cockroach. To harvest it, scientists need to cut open the cockroach’s midgut with a scalpel. Then, they soak up the liquid from the cockroach. This process takes about a day and a half.
Cockroach milk contains about 20 per cent fat. This makes it high in calories and kilojoules. It contains about four times the energy content of cow’s milk. The highest energy content comes from the pure oil, which contains 100 per cent fat. So, while you should definitely be careful when drinking cockroach milk, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s healthy.
Cockroach milk is a more complicated process than milking a cow. In order to harvest the milk, scientists had to cut open the dead female cockroach carrying her babies. The researchers then pipetted out the milk, which was in crystallized form. According to the study’s authors, cockroach milk is as healthy as cow milk but has more energy than cow milk. Moreover, compared to cow milk, cockroach milk is much cheaper. To produce one kilogram of cockroach milk, researchers would have to kill thousands of cockroaches.
Though cockroach milk may be a good option for people with lactose intolerant issues, it is not a healthy option for the general public. You won’t find cockroach milk in grocery store dairy aisles, but if you want to try it, you can always add protein powder to your regular milk.
