How Long Do Cockroaches Sleep?

Cockroaches like damp and dark places to sleep. You may find them sleeping under your furniture, behind cabinetry, inside boxes, and even inside your walls. You can’t find them sleeping in open areas, however. Instead, they prefer to sleep in a dark place near garbage, rotting organic matter, and leaky pipes. Cockroaches sleep flat and don’t move their legs.

Cockroaches are nocturnal creatures and only come out of hiding at night to feed and mate. Hence, if you’ve seen a cockroach during the day, chances are that you’ve come across it at night. The light will only spook them for a short time.

Cockroaches spend the night in three states. During the day, they are active, while at night they rest. During the day, they move their legs and antennae, while at night they are in their inactive, immobile state. These two phases are similar to the phases of sleep we go through.

It is important to understand roach sleep cycles and their activities. Roaches have a circadian rhythm, which gives them information about their active and sleeping cycles. This rhythm is followed by nearly all organisms. This rhythm may help cockroaches conserve energy and maintain optimal health. They aren’t always asleep, though, because their activity patterns change according to their last meal.

Cockroaches don’t like humans, so if you see one in your bed, it’s likely that it entered through a crack or hole. If you’re awake, they’ll be out of sight.
