How Large Is A Cockroach?
If you’ve ever wondered how large a cockroach is, you’re not alone. This common insect has six legs and can cover up to 50 feet of distance in just one second. Compared to human runners, that’s 200 miles per hour! And just to make you think you can’t get cockroaches out of your house, consider that some species can fly!
The American cockroach is about half an inch long and has a pale band on its pronotum. The female carries the egg case for up to six days, and when the egg case hatches, it is black. This species prefers warm, moist areas. In the Southern U.S., it is moderately able to fly, while in Maryland, it’s very difficult to fly.
Cockroaches are incredibly diverse in size, but they do have some physical characteristics that make them easily identifiable. They have an oval shape, a pair of long antennae, legs with spines, and a shield-like pronotum behind their head. Most species of cockroaches can’t fly for long distances, but some can use their wings to glide for short distances.
Identifying a cockroach by its size is an important part of getting rid of it. The average size of an adult cockroach is one-half to one-inch, which makes it one of the smallest bugs, but it is still dangerous because of the pathogenic bacteria they can carry.
