The female German cockroach carries the protective capsule until it is close to hatching time, and then deposits it at a hidden location where it will hatch. After hatching, the egg cases split open, and the nymphs emerge.
The size of a German roach depends on their environment. If you have children, they may leave food crumbs and this can attract them to your home. They also like light, so if you have light or food sources around, they may be attracted to them as well.
