Does Cockroach Give Leprosy?

It is believed that cockroaches can spread the bacillus responsible for leprosy. This bacterium causes severe skin sores and can damage nerves. People who are infected with the bacterium will suffer from fever, muscle aches, and sometimes convulsions. Symptoms of the disease will vary, but can include fever, diarrhea, and stiff neck. In addition, some people may experience deformities as a result of the infection.

Cockroaches do not directly transmit leprosy to humans, but their droppings are contaminated with the bacteria that causes it. When these bacteria contaminate food and surfaces, they spread the disease to humans. Although the disease is difficult to catch, it is curable.

Another effect of cockroaches on human health is allergic reactions. Cockroach allergens are known to trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions in sensitive people. Among the allergens that cockroaches release are E. coli, staphylococcus aureus, and streptococcus. Those who are allergic to these organisms may experience asthma attacks or skin rashes.

The cockroach lives for about 20 to 30 weeks. The eggs are carried around by female cockroaches. They are pillow-shaped and contain up to 48 eggs.
