Cockroach Identification
Cockroaches have mandibles that are used for chewing and biting food. They also have a gizzard that contains six folds and chitinous conical plates that grind food into small pieces. Cockroaches produce a large number of young during their lifetime.
Cockroaches can live for as long as six years. They feed on decayed organic matter. Oriental cockroaches are known to live for five or six years. The most common species in California is Blattella germanica. They prefer dark, warm, and moist areas.
Because of their high adaptability, cockroaches are often difficult to detect. Most of their feeding occurs during the night. During the day, they remain hidden and wait until nightfall to come out to find food. They are highly susceptible to diseases and may transmit salmonella and Shigella.
When identifying cockroaches, one thing to remember is that they can live without a head for up to a week. This is a remarkable feat. Although they do not have a head, they can hold their breath in water for up to 30 minutes. They will eventually die without food or water. However, cockroaches are persistent and can be killed by something else.
Cockroaches are among the most common pests that invade homes. They are especially harmful if they are found in areas where food is prepared and sanitation is poor. They can also contaminate food and utensils, leaving an unpleasant odor behind.
