Are Cockroaches Bad For Humans?
While cockroaches aren’t dangerous to humans in most instances, they can carry bacteria that can cause serious infections. Some of these bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, can cause minor problems in humans, such as boils, while others can be life-threatening, like infections of the lungs. In severe cases, exposure to cockroaches can lead to Strep infections.
The bite of a cockroach is incredibly rare, but if you do get bitten, it’s a good idea to see a doctor. Cockroach bites are difficult to describe, but they can cause minor irritation. A cockroach’s bite isn’t painful, and its itchiness is usually limited to the area they landed on.
Another common complaint with cockroaches is the odor that they leave. Cockroaches leave behind a foul odor that can cause gastrointestinal problems in some people. They can also trigger asthma attacks in people with certain allergies. Allergic reactions can be especially damaging for children. Asthmatic patients must keep their homes free of cockroach allergens to reduce the chances of triggering asthma attacks.
Cockroaches prefer to live close to humans, because they feel safe near them. Because of their nocturnal habits, they can remain undetected for long periods of time. Their active time is at night, when they can hide in cracks and crevices in furniture and walls. They will crawl around on dark surfaces when the lights are off, but will immediately move to their shelters when the lights come on.
