How Can Bed Bugs Make You Sick?
Bedbugs feed on the blood of their hosts and generally only bite in the dark. The bedbug’s bite is itchy and produces red welts. This skin irritation can lead to bacterial infections. It can take up to 14 days for you to notice the bite marks. Once they reach adulthood, bedbugs lay up to seven eggs per day. During their lifetime, they can lay hundreds of eggs.
The bites of bedbugs can cause small amounts of bleeding which is self-limiting. The blood that comes out of these bites often shows up as flecks in your bed sheets. However, some people develop large clusters of bedbug bites that resemble chickenpox and cause anemia. Others develop blisters.
In some severe cases, bedbug bites can lead to bacterial infections of the central nervous system. If left untreated, the bites can result in a painful infection and heart failure. Other effects include difficulty breathing, insomnia, and even depression. While these symptoms aren’t life-threatening, they can lead to serious complications, particularly if you’re young.
Some studies show that bedbugs carry viruses and other pathogens. They can even be carried in their stomach and feces. However, it can be difficult to get rid of them without hiring a professional.
