Does Bed Bugs Drink Blood?

Bedbugs originally came from Europe and were virtually wiped out in the 1950s. However, a chemical called DDT was discovered to be harmful to the insects, and it was banned in the U.S. in 1972. Thankfully, researchers are now able to use other methods to prevent bedbug infestations.
Although some species of bedbugs prefer to feed on human blood, others feed on the blood of other mammals. Although humans are their main source of blood, some species prefer the blood of other mammals such as bats. This is because they need a certain type of blood to lay eggs. However, some species will feed on whatever they can find.
The adult bedbug measures approximately 1/4 of an inch (6mm) long. They have no wings and are brown in color. Adult bedbugs become swollen and dark red after feeding. Female bedbugs lay between ten and fifty eggs at a time. The eggs are about an eighth of an inch (1mm) long and slightly curved. They are often laid in clusters near their harborages.
