What Ants Look Like

Despite being common and nuisance insects, ants aren’t just black and brown. Ants are a diverse group of insects with over 12,000 species found throughout the world.

Ants can be easily separated from other insects by their coloring, shape and size. They have six legs with three joints, elbowed antennae, and a thorax that’s constricted at the waist.

Adults are usually around a quarter to half an inch long. They’re usually brownish to black in color, but can vary depending on the species. Their bodies are covered with hard armor called the exoskeleton.

Ants have a wide range of food preferences. They’re most attracted to damp or sweet areas. They also like to forage near kitchens and bathrooms.

They’re also a good source of food for larger predators. Their stinger isn’t strong enough to hurt humans, but it’s a handy tool for catching prey.

The ant has a large head with compound eyes. It also has a powerful jaw. It’s also common to see ants with a dark abdomen.

Ants have a stinger at the end of their abdomen. This sting isn’t strong enough to hurt humans, and it’s not strong enough to break skin. But if you’re bitten, it’ll leave itchy blisters.

Ants are a common pest in homes. They usually invade homes during hot weather and droughts. They also eat crumbs and food left on counters and windows.

If you have ants in your home, you might want to take pictures of them. A magnified photo will show you the ant’s face.
