What Do Wasps Look Like?
Thousands of different species of wasps live in North America. Some are beneficial to the environment, while others can be a nuisance. Wasps come in many different colors, sizes and shapes. They are also very different from bees.
The most common types of wasps are paper wasps and yellow jackets. Paper wasps are slender insects with long legs. They are usually dark brown or black with yellow markings on their bodies. They are about 16-20 millimeters long. They can sting multiple times.
Yellow jackets are usually shorter than paper wasps. They are aggressive insects that attack people when disturbed. They also build large, underground nests. They often forage on meats, like hot dogs. They also eat honeydew, fruit, and human food.
European hornets, also known as giant hornets, are extremely large wasps. They have white markings on their thorax. These hornets can sting hundreds of times. The hornets can also inflict fatal injuries on people.
There are many species of wasps, and some are carnivorous. Most carnivorous wasps are parasitoid wasps. They lay eggs on top of a spider or host. They then burrow into the host’s body and bury it in a burrow. These wasps then swarm and sting.
The largest social wasp is the hornet. The hornet’s body is approximately half an inch long. Its wings are usually tipped with red or yellow. The hornet’s abdomen is black.
The queen wasp lays about 75,000 eggs in her nest. She then flies off to find a good nesting spot.
