Why Do Spiders Need Water to Survive?

It may be hard to believe, but spiders actually need water. A few species require water daily, while others do not. The smaller ones will drink a little water, but they can survive without it for days on end.

In addition to getting moisture from their food, most spiders obtain water by hunting other animals or by collecting it from the environment. Water is also available in the form of raindrops, dew, and humidity in the air.

Spiders use specialized mouthparts to catch and swallow water. These are called chelicerae. They look like straw, but are actually a complex structure of muscles that combine with smaller mouthparts to suck up liquid.

Using these body parts, spiders can consume water at a much faster rate than humans. In fact, spiders absorb proteins more easily when they have water in their system.

Aside from drinking water, some spiders also get their moisture from webbing. Some eat webbing in the morning to get a quick boost of moisture.

If you own a pet spider, make sure to give them water regularly. You can do this by placing a bowl of water near their vivarium. Be sure to fill the bowl with clean, chemical free water and change it often.

Another way to provide your pet with a little drink is to use an eyedropper. Alternatively, you can use a bottle cap to hold the water. Whether you decide to use a dropper or a bottle, be sure to change the water regularly and put it out in a shady area.
